When God Speaks

Grace did not save Noah. Obedience did

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it…” – Isaiah 30:21

A lot of the harm we experience in life is not always because God was silent. Sometimes, He spoke and we delayed. He instructed, we partially obeyed. And if we are honest, sometimes, it’s because we simply disobeyed. And when people die or get into bad situations, I sometimes put this into consideration. Wandering Wondering Wandering. This is not always an easy truth to sit with, but it is a necessary one. Delayed obedience can still expose us to consequences that prompt obedience would have protected us from.

God does not lead His people into confusion. He speaks. He guides. He warns. He redirects.

But the blessing is not just in hearing His voice, but in walking in the way He has shown.

And sometimes, the instruction feels daunting; Even though, “His commandments are not burdensome”

Sometimes, God’s instructions interrupt our plans. Sometimes, they challenge our pride. Other times, His instructions require us to release what we were trying to control.

But Scripture also tells us:

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” – 1 John 5:3

God’s instructions are not designed to crush us but to preserve us.

  • What feels heavy in the moment may actually be mercy in disguise.
  • What feels inconvenient may actually be protection.
  • What feels like sacrifice may actually be alignment.

This is why obedience matters.

The cost of obeying God will never be greater than the cost of ignoring Him. Saul learned this the hard way. After choosing partial obedience and then trying to cover it with religious performance, Samuel said to him:

“Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” – 1 Samuel 15:22

That verse still speaks today.

Many times, however…

We want to compensate with religious activity for areas where He asked for simple submission. (bruh)

We want to give God sacrifice after we have withheld obedience. (hmmn)

We want to pray around what He asked us to confront. (sigh)

We want to worship through what He asked us to surrender. (phew)

But God does not ask for performance before obedience. He asks for a yielded heart. And our obedience is not only personal. There is a larger witness attached to the life of the believer. Paul writes that through the Church, the manifold wisdom of God is made known to principalities and powers.

“To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.” – Ephesians 3:10

That means our lives are not random.

  • Our obedience preaches.
  • Our alignment testifies.
  • Our surrender becomes evidence of God’s wisdom in a world governed by rebellion, confusion, and darkness.

So when God speaks,

  • May we not just admire the instruction.
  • May we not delay until obedience becomes damage control.
  • May we not offer sacrifice where obedience was required.
  • May we hear clearly.
  • May we respond promptly.
  • May we obey fully.

Because when God speaks, His voice is never just information. It’s direction, protection, wisdom. It is love.

May God grant each of us listening ears and willing hearts to obey. Amen.
